Well, you can't say the fella wasn't warned. That was by-God satisfying, and very, very cool.

I’m so down for this!! Werewolves don’t tend to be my jam because I’ve seen/read so many cringey werewolf stories, but I am so here for post-Roman werewolves.

And I second Scoot’s comment about “gracelessly sturdy”. I love it. 😂

I third!

This story was so well on its own, I didn't even realize it was part of a larger world! I'll have to add The Bride-Price to my reading list.

Also, that ending was incredibly satisfying given who she was talking to, haha!

E.B. Howard's avatar

Haha! I knew you wouldn’t let that slide. Thank you!

Bride-Price is actually a completely different universe (the Robin Hood ballads), but it’s another historical setting that I wrote in a more detailed style. You might like it anyway!

Oooh, post Roman 5th century ? I’m in. (Also debating how much to go back down that research rabbit hole again for The Môrdreigiau Chronicles prequel.)

The last time I got sucked into a research rabbit hole, I came out 7 years later with no draft to show. 🫣 Slight benefit for that time period is that it's the Dark Ages, so there's not as much specific evidence to contend with (weren't you dealing with real world timelines too?) But I'd have to think hard about what was plausible, aside from, well, the werewolves thing.

Yes aside from werewolves and seadragons. Holly Brown (I think) here on Substack is a “dark ages” scholar. I’ve been considering upgrading to paid and she gives book recs also.

oh that’s right! thanks for the rec.

Oooh nice werewolf intro! I like it.

Also, for me, I just make almost all my fantasy characters Catholic regardless of it being fantasy 😂 I just come up with little explanations sometimes, or make Catholicism “sound” like it’s a fairytale version with the names God and the saints are known by in those kingdoms, and maybe bringing in some of the cultural traditions around the world. So that /could/ still work if you wanted to go that route!

Ooh, that’s true! I’ll think about it.

1- awesome

2- “gracelessly sturdy” is such a hilarious way to describe a woman but sets the tone. If i was to restack something it would be that but i was afraid of being offensive so didnt.

3- TWIST AT THE END. Incredible. I like this. I like that he’s the only one with a name. And that his is the story you are developing…

It wouldn’t offend me! 😆 So glad you liked it. He’s an interesting character, I need to work on him more…
